A working smoke alarm alerted a Streator resident to a fire inside a single-family home in the 500 block of South Sterling early Sunday morning. Streator Fire Department spokesman Bryan Park said the resident fled and called 911. Firefighters were dispatched at 3:13 a.m. and arrived on scene about two minutes later to find heavy fire and smoke coming from the rear of the residence. Crews used hose lines to knock down the fire and made entry through the rear door. The fire was under control in less than 10 minutes, Park said. Firefighters ventilated and overhauled the home to ensure all fire was extinguished. Firefighters remained on scene for several hours. A total of 10 firefighters worked on the scene. There were no reports of injuries. Damage to the rear of the home was severe with heavy fire, smoke and water damage, said Park. The rest of the home suffered moderate smoke damage.
