Local fire departments are always working with the community for fire and safety tips. In Belivdere, they're teaching a different demographic not just homeowners, but rather the youngest residents. The old stop, drop and roll motto has been updated. The Belvidere Fire Department is making sure kids know what to do in case of an emergency by going to their schools, and having fun open houses, inviting them and their parents to learn more about fire safety. "We have kids constantly come up to us and 'I remember what you told us' and I know they're learning", says Belvidere Fire Department Chief Al Hyser. That's the goal the Belvidere Fire Department hopes to keep reaching by having fire department open houses. The department is making sure the message sticks by making the learning fun with demonstrations and games. Chief Hyser said, "we're doing prevention stuff, we're trying to teach our community to be smarter when it comes to fires".
