Firefighters are going into Charleston and Ashmore elementary schools this week in the lead up to the Fire Prevention Week open house Saturday.
Capt. James Calvert of the Charleston Fire Department said firefighters are informing younger students in the area on fire prevention tips and advice, much of which older populations have already latched on to and retained.
"It is almost a review for later grades," Calvert said.
The message has been the same each year, Calvert said, and this is by design. The captain said they start drilling in this message in preschool. Soon after, the message is taken home and used. Calvert said students have come up to local firefighters and said they have been in situations involving a fire in the home and they knew what to do.
