Voting as one, the Peoria City Council on Tuesday approved spending nearly $50,000 to buy tactical body armor for its firefighters and police officers. Without any discussion, the council voted 10-0 to spend the $47,547 that buys 35 plate carriers, 20 ballistic vest and 16 ballistic helmets. The Fire Department, which currently has no body armor, would get the 20 vests and 16 helmets. The 35 plate carriers, said Peoria Police Assistant Chief Michael Mushinsky, would provide patrol officers with protection against rifle rounds that are usually fired at a higher velocity and thus, have more penetrating power. City officers currently wear personal body armor and still would.
