The Du Quoin city council is mulling a new hiring process for some city jobs that would rely on a committee -- instead of a single commissioner -- to recommend a hire to the entire council. Police officers and firefighters are not part of the new policy, because those professional employees have specific rules that govern their fitness. Police and fire candidates must pass rigorous tests before they are added to the hiring list. Meanwhile, City Attorney Aaron Atkins and Chuck Novak, the city's special projects coordinator, have been asked to fine-tune the new hiring proposal before it comes back to the city council for review. Alongi said when positions come open, they are posted on duquoin.org and frequently are put in the local newspapers as legal notices.
