VIDEO: Champaign Fire Department braced the snowy conditions Tuesday to practice their ice rescue skills.
Crews were stationed at Kaufman Lake working on techniques to save people who fall through ice.
Lt. J.P. Childers, who ran the training, said they have had issues on that lake before.
He said even though people falling through ice is rare, there are more bodies of water in Champaign than people think.
"Presume all ice is too thin to support your weight,” Lt. Childers said. “Always go out in the winter conditions with a friend or with a cell phone as well.”
Champaign Fire Department will be out at Kaufman Lake for the next two days training.
