Authorities said Thursday that two people died in a fire at 406 Clark St. early Wednesday.
“It has been determined that there were unfortunately two fatalities, an adult male and child. The fire is still under investigation at this time,” a city news release said Thursday morning.
Galesburg police and fire crews responded to 406 Clark St. after receiving a call for a structure fire there at 2:39 a.m. Wednesday. All three stations, with 11 firefighters, responded, acting Fire Chief Randy Hovind previously said.
The combination of wind and low temperatures, something area firefighters dealt with late last week with a house fire on Angling Road, contributed to the difficulties battling the blaze.
The cold temperatures also caused three fire hydrants to be “bad due to freezing.” Crews were able to get a fourth hydrant to work as they battled the blaze.
