A gas line was struck during excavation work in Monmouth Thursday afternoon. Monmouth Fire Chief Casey Rexroat said Monmouth police, fire and city works crews responded to North G Street and West Harlem Avenue at about 2:03 p.m. for a gas line that was hit. That was at the job site of the new Warren County YMCA Pattee Water Park. “They hit a gas line that was not marked. I don’t think anyone realized the gas line was there,” Rexroat said. Nearby houses were evacuated as a precaution and Rexroat said fire crews remained at the intersection for about an hour. No injuries were reported. “Most of the gas was carried away by the wind, and that type of gas naturally rises,” Rexroat said. Fire crews “monitored the area until Ameren Illinois arrived and sealed the leak off.” Sam Brooks, executive director of the Warren County YMCA, said Thursday that the work started about a handful of days ago.
