A woman was treated at a local hospital for smoke inhalation following a fire around 4 p.m. Sunday in a five-story apartment complex at 327 N. Church St. Rockford Fire Department said the fire was discovered in the basement laundry area and was reported by building occupants and a passerby. The burning contents spread smoke from the basement to the second floor. Fire alarms alerted occupants to evacuate the building. Firefighters extinguished the blaze and kept it from spreading to other rooms. About $5,000 in damage occurred. Once smoke was cleared, all occupants were able to return to their apartments. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
