A fire in an industrial sales building on Broadway shut down part of the street late Friday morning as fire departments from Alton, East Alton and Wood River dealt with the blaze.
The fire was reported at about 11 a.m. at Industrial Machine Sales, 2625 E. Broadway. No injuries were reported.
Alton Deputy Fire Chief Bradley Sweetman said the fire was quickly put out and other departments were released from the scene less than an hour after arriving. However, Alton fire crews remained on the scene to monitor the building.
A man who identified himself as the owner, but declined to give his name, said the fire started when a wood-burning heater malfunctioned. He said the building was evacuated, in part because of flammable materials stored on site.
