More than 25 firefighters from multiple departments battled intense heat from soaring temperatures when they responded Thursday afternoon to a structure fire in Vine Grove that destroyed a home and vehicle. The house, in the 2800 block of Hill Street, was “a total loss,” said Steve New, chief of the Vine Grove Fire Department. No one was injured, but the fire incinerated part of the house and caused smoke and heat damage to other parts. It also scorched one an SUV and damaged a car. As of Thursday afternoon, New did not know what caused the blaze or where it originated in the single-level home. Multiple residents at the home made it out safely, New said. Firefighters from Vine Grove, Rineyville, Flaherty, Radcliff and Fort Knox departments responded to the fire, which was called in around 2 p.m. New said the high temperatures necessitated more manpower. The heat index was above 100 degrees as firefighters worked to put out of the fire.
