On Wednesday, some students in Lexington will go back to school at the city’s newest and largest elementary school.
There was a ribbon-cutting on Monday to officially open the new school’s doors.
The school is named after Brenda Cowan, a beloved, history-making Lexington firefighter who was killed in the line of duty in 2004.
Cowan started working for the fire department in 1992 and was the first African-American woman hired and promoted to lieutenant in department history.
A month after her promotion, she was gunned down while responding to a domestic violence call.
