In this year's most recent report for water pressure and fire hydrant efficiency, four unmarked fire hydrants in the city of Richmond are currently inoperable, according to Richmond Utilities General Manager Scott Althauser.
"Each year, the city fire department issues reports to assess which hydrants need repairs and which aren't working and they come back with a priority list," Althauser said. "A majority of the hydrants just need repairs."
Such repairs can include issues like a valve stem being stuck, greasing or pipes freezing. He explained that hydrants that aren't functioning typically are because they are outdated and need to be dug up from the ground to replace entirely.
One hydrant that will need to be completely removed and replaced is near the intersection of the Eastern Bypass and Dwight Drive by Orange Leaf, a high traffic area.
