Firefighters in Webster County battled a field fire involving several acres off Smith Brantley Road today near Blackford. Wheatcroft Fire Department Chief Kerry W. DeHaven reported the agency requested mutual aid from Dixon and Clay fire departments to gain control of the 10-plus acre blaze shortly after 11 a.m. Utility vehicles were used from all three departments and a local property owner assisted with using a UTV that had a water tank. The fire along the roadside was extinguished by using a tanker at the scene. The cause of the fire was deemed undetermined, DeHaven reported, adding the flames originated roadside. Several counties in the region are under a burn ban due to drought conditions. No structures were affected nor injuries reported.
