VIDEO: A Louisville woman's 80th birthday wish brought things full circle. Ashton said her father was a firefighter at the station and served in the Navy. "He was stationed here from the time he went into the fire department until, I'm sure after he got back from World War II," Ashton said. Louisville Fire Major Bobby Cooper shared her father's personnel file as an extra gift. The file revealed her father, who was born in 1911, joined this firehouse when he was 23 years old. Shirley told the firefighters at the station that, 80 years ago, her father had called his fellow firefighters moments after her birth. He needed a name, and the captain held a brainstorming meeting at the old firehouse. "'Who's for Shirley Ann?' and every man, of course, (raised their hand), so that's how I got named Shirley Ann," Ashton said.
