An elderly couple died in a house fire early Tuesday morning in Union County. Union County Coroner Stephen Shouse said Joseph Sheffer, 86, and his wife, Joann Sheffer, 81, were killed when their house in the Grove Center area caught on fire. The Union County Dispatch Center was notified around 1:45 a.m. that a residence in Grove Center was "fully involved," according to a news release. Henshaw Fire Chief Matt Williams said Grove Center is a cluster of about 20 to 25 homes and a neighbor spotted the fire. Williams said when fire crews from five area departments arrived, they did not have information that anyone was inside. Coroner Shouse said, "Due to the intensity of the fire, rescue of the occupants was not possible and the elderly couple perished." Shouse said once the fire was partially under control, firefighters were able to enter the structure, locate and remove the couple.
