The pastors of three St. Landry Parish churches destroyed by arson received a special Halloween treat Thursday when Bishop J. Douglas Deshotel of the Catholic Diocese of Lafayette presented the religious leaders with $50,000 toward their rebuilding efforts. The three historically black Baptist churches were destroyed between March 26 and April 4. Accused arsonist Holden Matthews is awaiting trial on state and federal arson and hate crimes charges. The group met at the site of the former St. Mary Baptist Church off La. 103 in Port Barre on Thursday afternoon, discussing their faith and the opportunities for goodness, love and charity that have grown from the tragedy.
