A fire that started in a boat on a trailer and was fanned by high winds early Tuesday morning, spread to an adjacent building at 9 Pond St. before crews from five fire departments managed to put it out. A press release Tuesday night said Newbury firefighters were dispatched at 3:22 a.m. to a reported boat fire. When the crew from Newbury Engine 10 arrived from the Morgan Avenue station a few blocks away, firefighters found "heavy fire coming from a boat and the adjacent structure. The fire was able to be knocked down before spreading to nearby structures." The press release said high wind was a factor in the rapid spread of fire from the boat to the house. Fire Chief Douglas Janvrin could not be reached for comment and there was no information available about what might have caused the fire on the boat.
