Inside the house, a wood stove made for a cozy winter morning. But out in the yard, the smoke was billowing down.
A chimney fire at 152 Depot St. broke out around 1 p.m. today, causing no injuries or significant property damage thanks to an attentive neighbor.
“My son lives on Church Street which is behind the house that had the fire,” said 74-year-old Cary Snow, who happened to visiting from Brockton that afternoon. “The smoke came out of the chimney and just blanketed his yard.”
Snow said he and his son ran over to 152 Depot St. after seeing the smoke to alert the house’s occupants, who they had never met. “They were surprised,” said Snow. “They didn’t know the smoke was coming out.”
The Merola family immediately called the fire department, which responded about 12:52 p.m.
“It was very prompt and it all worked out just fine,” said Sue Merola, a resident of the home.
