VIDEO: A Fall River man in his mid 30's fell nearly 20 ft. on Monday after he climbed a watchtower on Gooseberry Island. "There was not much to see because it was kind of dark at that point," Dan Baldwin, Deputy Chief of the Westport Fire Dept. said. "I could tell he was face down in the gravel. I was able to speak to him. He said he had some broken bones. He did not believe he was bleeding profusely from any location. The tower has been fortified by the state and is not meant for anyone to use, which made it difficult for firefighters to rescue the man. "We were extricating him and our medics were inside treating him. We used hand tools like shovels to dig out a large amount of dirt that was used to block people from getting in," Baldwin said. Many locals said daredevils have been climbing the tower for years, even painting graffiti on the top.
