VIDEO: Young, aspiring firefighters are getting a glimpse of the real thing this week at the Braintree Fire Department’s first ever Junior Fire Academy. “It’s wicked fun,” Lucy Delgallo, one of the “recruits,” said on the first day of the week-long program. Lucy and her friends who also participated in the Junior Fire Academy, Bella Corcoran and Jordan O’Brien, all said they would consider going into the fire service, depending on how the rest of the week went. They were most excited to go out on the department’s fire boat, an outing planned for day two, on Tuesday. The program, which was scheduled to run from Monday to Friday of this week, allows rising eighth graders from Braintree to learn the ins and outs of being a firefighter. Braintree Fire Lieutenant Freddy Viola, who’s leading the program alongside firefighter Nick DiMartino, said they’re aiming to make the week resemble the state’s real fire academy as closely as they can.
