PHOTOS: Fire department spokesman Brian Tetreault said arson investigators determined the cause of Saturday afternoon’s blaze was improper disposal of smoking material. Fire heavily damaged a Bristol Street two-family house Saturday afternoon, forcing four people out of their homes. Springfield Fire Department spokesman, Brian Tetreault said in a release the 3:41 p.m. fire started in the home at 48-50 Bristol St. and heavily damaged three floors of the structure as well as the exterior sheathing. Fire officials estimated the fire caused approximately $100,000 in damage to the building. Heat from the fire at 48-50 Bristol St also took its toll on the house next door at 52-54 Bristol, melting vinyl siding from its exposure nearest the fire. Fire officials estimate that would cost approximately $20,000 to repair. One person was transported to the hospital after she experienced an unknown medical event as she watched the fire.
