A fire that broke out in a cooking appliance at the Big Y World Class Market on College Highway Wednesday afternoon prompted the closing of the store for several hours, a fire department official said.
Deputy Chief Richard Stefanowicz said staff evacuated the store and unsuccessfully attempted to put out the fire. The store’s fire suppression system kept the fire in check until firefighters arrived and put it out. Although the store has since reopened, its food preparation area remained closed, per order of the Health Department, as of Thursday morning, Stefanowicz said. “Big Y was great about evacuating people and everything on that end of it,” he said.
