PHOTOS: Firefighters made quick work of a blaze that ignited in the first-floor kitchen of a multi-family home on Sherman Street Monday afternoon.
The fire was contained to the first floor of 17 Sherman St. The first-floor residents were not home when the fire broke out around 1 p.m. Residents on the second floor smelled smoke, called 911 and escaped with two dogs. Firefighters rescued a lizard from the home, said Deputy Fire Chief John Austin. Austin was unsure how many people live in the downtown duplex. It took firefighters about 5 minutes to put out the fire, said Austin. Fire officials are looking for a cause. Austin estimated the damage at around $100,000. There was no visible damage to the outside of the home. The home is assessed at $513,500 and is owned by Daniel and Carolyn Langan, according to the Natick Assessor’s office.
