Firefighters Tuesday held what may well be their last ice rescue practice of the season with the rescue of a dog that had broken through the ice on Chebacco Lake. Fire Chief Raymond Brunet said the dispatcher notified them around 1:30 p.m. that there were two dogs on the ice off the beach area, and that one had fallen through. The chief said he called for any off-duty firefighters in the area and arrived on the scene with three men.
They pulled on ice rescue suits, and two entered the water as the third stayed on shore as backup. One waded out to the tiring Labrador retriever, pulled it onto the ice, and brought it back ashore. The firefighters dried the dog off as well as they could, then brought it aboard the rescue truck to get warm before they turned the canine over to the animal officer, who notified its owner.
