An ammonia leak was reported in a building on National Grid property near Nantucket Memorial Airport Thursday afternoon, the second emission of the dangerous chemical on the island in three days. Nantucket fire chief Stephen Murphy said the leak, from loose flange bolts above the valve at the bottom of an ammonia tank, was contained to an unoccupied, contained space and was not considered serious. No one was injured. The fire department responded to the National Grid building just after 2 p.m. and cordoned off the area, remaining on the scene until the arrival of a Clean Harbors environmental clean-up team, Murphy said. The amount of ammonia released was much less than what leaked at the Nantucket Ice rink Tuesday night when a hose on the facility’s refrigeration system was inadvertently dislodged by a worker doing routine maintenance, Murphy said.
