Local firefighters and many in the community are mourning the death of retired Assistant Fire Chief Glenn Coffin, who died Friday at his home at age 78. Coffin served West Newbury for more than 45 years, achieving the second-highest rank in the department after serving as a part-time dispatcher, according to a press release. He was the grandfather of West Newbury and Rowley firefighter Cooper Carifio. “We are thankful for Assistant Chief Coffin’s many dedicated years of service to our community,” West Newbury Fire Chief Michael Dwyer said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time.” He worked for more than 30 years at Western Electric as a computer programmer. He was passionate about firefighting, Freemasonry and sports of all competitive levels, according to the release.
