PHOTOS: It’s rare that a situation arises in which a firefighter has to jump out of a window.
But in the event they ever have to, safety is the top priority.
That’s why the 13 recruits in the recent Brockton Fire Academy spent time learning bailout techniques and how to rappel down buildings.
If a firefighter is in an area away from an exit and a fire flashes over, meaning an exposed combustible ignites, a window might be the only option to get out of a burning building. The recruits learned how to safely jump out of a window, using equipment to latch onto something just inside the window and keeping their foot on the windowsill, which leaves their body hanging onto the outside wall of the building.
