A two-alarm basement fire caused extensive damage to a block of Weymouth businesses Wednesday afternoon, according to the Weymouth Fire Department.
Officials said firefighters received the call at about 12:45 p.m. for a report of a fire at 396 Bridge St. “I went down to the basement, saw some smoke, came up to get my cellphone so I could get the flashlight on and see what’s going on and I couldn’t get down there again,” said Dan Cellucci, one of the business owners who was affected. “That was it.”
“One of my tenants smelled smoke,” said Annmarie Kelley, the owner of the property. “He came over and got us. We evacuated everybody (and) called the Fire Department.”
Three businesses -- an auto body shop, a tailor and an antique shop -- were impacted by the fire since they all share the same cellar. Kelley said the property dates back to 1890.
