PHOTOS: Authorities are investigating the cause of a fire that burned through a pile of scrap metal and plastic debris for several hours at the Excel Recycling plant on Sunday morning, according to a fire department lieutenant. Freetown police and fire officials responded to the recycling plant located in the Assonet Industrial Park, off Ridge Hill Road, about 6:40 a.m. for reports of heavy smoke and fire in the area, according to a statement the Freetown Police Department released on social media. They encountered a pile of metal scrap and plastic debris about two stories high on fire, said Fire Lt. Mark Brogan. Police said the department also received reports of “explosions” in the area. “The cause is under investigation by us, the police department and the Massachusetts fire marshal,” said Brogan.
