First responders were able to pull of a daring rescue attempt after two kayakers fell into rough waters in Topsfield.
The Topsfield Police and Fire departments said they were notified just before 8:30 a.m. Sunday by a man who saw the kayakers in the Ipswich River as he was driving on Boston Street. First responders had to scale a steep, rocky drop in order to reach the victims, who were in danger of being swept away by strong currents.
Once they reached the river bank, the first responders threw rope out to the kayakers and were able to pull them to the shore from about 30 feet away.
"This time of year is tempting to get out and enjoy the outdoors in New England, especially with the ongoing pandemic keeping people indoors," reads a joint statement from Topsfield Fire Chief Jenifer Collins-Brown and Police Chief Evan Haglund.
