More than 150 residents have been displaced after a major pipe burst causing water to pour through all apartments in a seven-story building early Sunday.
The Springfield Fire Department was called at 3:23 a.m. to the apartment building at 15 Girard Ave. to find water pouring from the seventh floor, through all the apartments and flowing into the lobby, said Fire Lt. Brian Tetreault, commander of the Arson and Bomb Squad. All the residents were evacuated by firefighters with the assistance of Springfield Police and medical personnel from AMR ambulance. No one was injured in the incident, Tetreault said.
Between 150 and 200 people live in the building. Residents initially boarded a bus, provided by PVTA, and were then brought to the nearby Rebecca Johnson School which is serving as a warming center and shelter, he said.
