The Falmouth Fire Rescue Department has hired four new firefighters who will be on the job within the next two weeks and the department is in the process of hiring six more as soon as possible, acting Chief Timothy R. Smith said.
The new hires do not include the 10 more who will be hired after January 1, largely as part of a $971,507 Proposition 2½ override that passed at Town Meeting in May and was approved at Town Meeting in June.
The current recruits are filling vacancies from resignations or personnel who are out on administrative or sick leave. It does not mean that the hires will allow the West Falmouth fire station to be opened full time.
“Between the ones budgeted for next year, along with personnel coming back from leave, I think the impact on West Falmouth [fire station] will be lessened as we continue to increase personnel,” Chief Smith said.
