Fire crews from five communities battled a chemical fire at a plant on Opportunity Way on Friday, the second such incident at the same factory in 18 months.
No injuries were reported. The origin and cause of the fire are still under investigation.
Chief Christopher J. LeClaire said the call for help to PCI Synthesis/Seqens came around 5:36 p.m.
“Upon arrival, Newburyport Engine 5 had heavy smoke coming from several roof vents and called for a working fire response,” he said in a statement. Minutes later, firefighters determined that the incident appeared to be a chemical fire, and LeClaire called for a second alarm response.
“Firefighters were able to knock the fire down after about 20 minutes, aided by the working sprinkler system in the building,” LeClaire said. The incident was declared under control at 6:48 p.m.
