A large structure fire at 2843 Cranberry Highway has closed the west bypass at the division of Rte. 6 and Rte. 28, near the end of Sandwich Road. The building is located roughly behind the Elks Club. The building, known as “the old electric building,” currently houses Brian’s Auto repair shop in the basement along with other industrial space. The fire appeared to have spread throughout the building, as firefighters from Wareham and Carver worked to beat it back from at least three angles. The intersection of Cranberry Highway and Sandwich Road is closed, except to allow people to turn onto Sandwich Road from Cranberry Highway. There is no access to Cranberry Highway from Sandwich Road. The fire began at around 6 p.m. Shortly thereafter, police apprehended a man who ran over a firehose in his car before running toward the blaze, according to scanner chatter. Firefighters were still fighting the fire at 9:45 p.m.
