As a longtime firefighter and paramedic, Larry DuHadaway has witnessed tragedy — but nothing like the crash that claimed five members of a Teaneck, New Jersey, family Friday afternoon on Del. 1 near Townsend.
The off-duty firefighter, who works in Howard County, Maryland, and volunteers with the Christiana Fire Company in New Castle County, was driving to the beach for the weekend with his family.
Like hundreds of others traveling Delaware’s major artery on the holiday weekend, he headed south on Del. 1 and was about four vehicles behind a work truck that began veering in the left lane.
First, it swerved into the left shoulder, he said, touching the rumble strips before moving back into the middle of the lane.
