The roof of an old vacant building in downtown Hagerstown collapsed. Around 9:30 this morning the Hagerstown fire marshal received a call about a gas odor from The Potomac Bead Company on West Washington Street. The fire marshal says when they arrived they discovered that the building roof next door, 45 West Washington St. caved in, breaking a gas line and some glass windows at the bead company. The owner of the property says the building has been in bad condition from old age and they had been petitioning to have the building demolished before the roof collapsed. Buildings between 43 West Washington St. and 53 West Washington St. have been declared condemned, and that area is blocked off as inspectors assess the damage.
