The Office of the State Fire Marshal is investigating an explosion that happened inside the basement of a Mechanicsville home Monday night. According to the Deputy Fire Marshal's report, on Feb. 11 at 9:16 p.m. crews were alerted to the 28900 block of Shannon Court, Mechanicsville for the report of a structure fire. A small fire in the home's basement was created by the explosion and was extinguished by the homeowner before units arrived. The occupants and pets were able to escape the home without injury and are being helped by friends and family. Officials say the explosion caused approximately $100,000 worth of damage to the home. The cause of the explosion remains under investigation but does not seem suspicious, authorities say.
