An early morning fire destroyed a Somerset County home and sent one person to the hospital. According to the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office, the blaze broke out shortly after midnight Wednesday in the living room of the one-story home, located at 7549 Meadow Bridge Road in Eden. Owner John Van Ess reported the fire and it took crews from the Fruitland Fire Department about 20 minutes to bring it under control. The state fire marshal's office reports one occupant was taken to Peninsula Regional Medical Center for treatment of smoke inhalation before being released. The fire caused an estimated $100,000 in damage to the structure with another $20,000 in damage to its contents. There was a smoke alarm present but it was unknown if it had activated. The cause is under investigation.
