The Galena Volunteer Fire Company was awarded a Department of Homeland Security – Federal Emergency Management Agency Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Friday, July 31.
A news release from the fire company states that the success of the grant was a direct result of the effort put forward by the Grant Committee of the GVFC as well as Firegrants.com.
The GVFC’s grant of $184,738 will allow for the purchase of 28 self-contained breathing apparatus as well as three rapid intervention packs to aid in supplying breathing air to injured or trapped firefighters. The SCBA will replace the current inventory of equipment, which is more than 20 years old and at the end of its service life.
The AFG program is highly competitive and awards funding directly to fire departments throughout the county to purchase equipment for firefighting and other emergency response needs, according to the release.
