An apartment fire in Sanford displaced at least four people Wednesday, and crews say it’s unknown when it will be safe for them to return home. When fire crews arrived to the apartment on Cottage Street, all residents had made it safely outside. Sanford Assistant Fire Chief Rick Smith says crews were able to rescue a cat and a dog. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but Smith says crews were able to contain the spread of the fire to just one apartment inside the building. “Anytime that we have a fire like this, the ability to stop the fire early and stop the spread from apartment building to apartment building is one hundred percent credited to having a highly trained, staffed fire department,” Smith said. Smith says none of the residents can stay inside the apartment building until it’s cleared by code enforcement and cleaned of any harmful chemicals.
