Firefighters have been getting hands-on training, in a program starting this year for Southern Maine. Roger Hooper is the fire administrator of York County and has helped to organize the program. He says fighting fires is incredibly important in a state known for its forests. He says the skills have become even more important in recent years due to strong winter storms destroying trees. "Over the last few years, we've had a lot of winter storms. We've had a lot of wind that has created what we call 'blowdown', blown down trees, branches and things that are still out on the forest,” Hooper said. "In dry conditions, it is very ripe and very prime for a major fire. Making sure that we have crews that can control those fires is important in a state as forested as Maine is."
