An industrial fire near South Haven late on Wednesday morning was dealt with quickly, thanks to the help of some neighbors.
According to South Haven Area Emergency Services, they received “mutual aid” by crews from the cities of Fennville and Bangor, as well as the townships of Ganges, Lee and Columbia, in keeping a blaze at the Lakeshore Iron facility off of County Road 687 from spreading beyond the attic. Workers at the steel fabricating plant spotted flames coming from the ceiling just after 11 AM, and all staffers were able to evacuate the building quickly and without incident. The aid from neighboring communities was needed by SHAES because water to combat the fire needed to be shuttled in from tankers.
No injuries to employees or first responders were noted, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
