PHOTOS: Fire crews have extinguished the better part of a massive fire that caused numerous explosions at a welding plant and residential evacuations in Pittsfield Township about 12:40 p.m. Thursday, April 11. Fire officials, who went door to door evacuating homes and and businesses in a 1-mile radius surrounding Ann Arbor Welding Supply, 4811 Carpenter Road, lifted the evacuation order about 5:30 p.m. Thursday. “Most folks are being allowed to return, as only Carpenter Road between Morgan and Ellsworth remain closed,” Pittsfield Township Public Safety Director Matthew Harshberger said. Those still affected “will be able to return later when the large butane tank finishes bleeding off,” he said. Harshberger said investigators are waiting for the ongoing butane tank fire to burn out before entering the premises, evaluating the damage and completing their investigation.
