A single-vehicle crash in Bay City’s South End has claimed the life of a local man. About 4 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 22, police, firefighters, and paramedics responded to a reported car that crashed into a tree on South Madison Avenue near 17th Street, reports the Bay City Department of Public Safety. A nearby resident heard the crash and helped the 68-year-old male driver from the vehicle, fearing it was going to catch fire due to smoke emanating from the engine compartment. Emergency personnel treated the man at the scene. He was then transferred to McLaren Bay Region hospital, where he eventually died from his injuries. Officers investigating the crash determined the vehicle had been heading south on South Madison when it left the roadway and struck the tree head-on. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
