A benefit for Unadilla Township Fire Chief Mark Schroeder's recovery from a pulmonary embolism was a success, organizers say. The event for Schroeder raised just over $10,600, Assistant Fire Chief Wendy Hause said. It was held Saturday at the Putnam Township Fire Department. "We had an outstanding turnout the whole three hours the benefit ran," Hause said. The amount raised Saturday doesn't include the $5,270 raised from online donation site GoFundMe as of Wednesday, Hause said. All of the money will go directly to Schroeder's medical expenses. Schroeder, who was hospitalized last month with the pulmonary embolism, was released on Feb. 1 from a hospital in Ypsilanti but was not able to attend the benefit. "We did FaceTime with him. He was able to see the crowd and hear us yell 'hello' to him, so he was quite touched at that," Hause said.
