As of 4 p.m. Friday afternoon Greg Amburgey is a retired man. Amburgey worked for the Putnam Township Fire Department for more than 40 years, following in his father's footsteps when he turned 18 years old. "He was involved in the fire department at the age of 11," said retired Putnam Township fire chief Gordy McIlvain. Young Amburgey would run to the fire station and to reset the alarms used to call out firefighters, McIlvain recalled. Now age 60, Amburgey is looking forward to checking trips off his bucket list with his wife while enjoying retirement in the Upper Peninsula. Firefighters and other emergency response personnel gathered at the fire department Friday afternoon for a retirement party complete with cake and a custom retirement hat. “All my mentors are here, it’s great,” Amburgey said.
