A worker was seriously injured at the Mercy Hospital construction site in Muskegon Thursday afternoon. The 22-year-old reportedly was struck in the head by a large construction aluminum construction beam just before 1 p.m. on Nov. 14. Muskegon firefighters used a ladder truck to rescue the construction worker off the roof of the older portion of the hospital at 1500 E. Sherman Blvd. The rescue effort occurred near the outpatient entrance of Mercy Health’s Mercy Campus. Muskegon Fire Battalion Chief Jim Mathews said the worker was talking to his rescuers. He was taken to Mercy’s Hackley Campus for treatment. Mathews said he was taken there, rather than inside Mercy Hospital, because Hackley has a trauma unit. Workers are constructing a $291 million, 10-floor tower at the Mercy Campus as well as renovating the existing hospital. Hackley Hospital will close when the Mercy project is completed next year.
