The driver of a car that ended up in a pond near an apartment building is in the hospital after firefighters rescued him Wednesday morning. The driver, an adult male, was unable to unlock the doors of the vehicle in the pond, so firefighters broke the rear passenger’s side window to open the doors and pull the driver out. When emergency personnel arrived to the scene, Grand Rapids Fire Capt. Brian DeForest said a bystander was in the water checking on the driver who was trapped in the driver’s seat. The car was floating in the middle of the pond, DeForest said, and the water inside was up to the driver’s waist.
