Siblings who died in Upper Peninsula fire identified

Two people who were unable to escape a fire in the Upper Peninsula on Saturday have been identified. TV-6 FOX UP reports that the victims were 69-year-old Mary Burton and 72-year-old Rodney Lafond. The two were brother and sister. At about 7:20 a.m. on Jan. 18, Michigan State Police troopers from the St. Ignace Post responded to a residential house fire in Portage Township where two people were not able to get out. Multiple fire departments responded, and fire department officials located Burton and Lafond deceased inside the home. The fire was battled by members of the Portage Township Fire Department, Garfield Township Fire Department, Newton Township Fire Department, Columbus Township Fire Department and Newberry Fire Department.
